De Reiziger<\/h3>\n

Later zorgden ook zijn eigen verplichtingen ervoor dat hij onophoudelijk door het gecultiveerde Europa trok en zo een netwerk opbouwde van vrienden en denkers.<\/p>\n

Erasmus bracht zijn jeugd in de Nederlanden (Rotterdam, Deventer) door. In die periode werd hij monnik in het klooster Steyn (bij Gouda), waar hij zijn kennis van de oude Klassieken vergrootte.<\/p>\n

Hij verliet het klooster om aan de universiteit van Parijs (1493) te gaan studeren, waar hij voor een karig loon Latijnse les gaf. In 1499 maakte hij in Engeland kennis met Thomas More, met wie hij bevriend raakte. Tijdens de regering van Hendrik VII bezocht hij als student of als docent vaak de universiteiten van Oxford en Cambridge.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=”middle”][vc_column][vc_row_inner row_content_width=”grid” content_text_aligment=”center”][vc_column_inner][vc_empty_space height=”80px”][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle” row_content_width=”grid” content_text_aligment=”left”][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”5538″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_column_text]Zijn reis naar Itali\u00eb (1506-1509) gaf hem de gelegenheid om beroemde plaatsen uit de Oudheid te bezoeken, de collecties van grote bibliotheken te raadplegen en zijn Grieks bij te schaven, een must om oude handschriften te kunnen ontcijferen. Hij was echter geschokt door de pracht en praal in de pauselijke paleizen, het bijgeloof van het volk en de oorlogszucht van paus Julius II.<\/p>\n

Bij zijn terugkeer werd hij benoemd tot raadsman van de latere Keizer Karel V. Hij vestigde zich in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden (1516-1521) en verbleef in Antwerpen, Brugge, Leuven en Mechelen. Ook bracht hij enkele maanden in Anderlecht door, tegenwoordig een Brusselse gemeente.
\nHij was er gekomen om aan te sterken en te werken aan zijn vertaling (vanuit het Grieks in het Latijn) van het Nieuwe Testament met het oog op een nieuwe editie. Tijdens zijn verblijf in Anderlecht legde hij regelmatig een bezoek af bij de jonge Keizer Karel V in diens Coudenbergpaleis in Brussel.
