Rubens Rosa
En la forêt de longue attente

The forest is omnipresent in the medieval imagination.
It is alternately a refuge, a place of spiritual quest, or a wild and ominous place where wolves and bandits can appear at any moment.
In Charles d’Orléans’ poem, the forest of long waiting, which symbolizes the desire for the love of joy is devastated by the winds of Fortune.

L’ensemble

Rubens Rosa is a young medieval music ensemble based in Basel (Switzerland). It is co-directed by Aliénor Wolteche (bowed vielle) and Matthieu Romanens (tenor). Its repertoire ranges from accompanied monody of the 13th century to vocal and instrumental polyphony of the late Middle Ages. Complementary musical approaches aided by shared leadership, are the hallmark of Rubens Rosa. The ensemble passionately strives to create a sonic and poetic alchemy between the voice and ancient instruments, whether in the realm of secular monody accompanied by the vielle, harp, or lute, or in sacred polyphony.

In August 2023, the duo Aliénor Wolteche and Matthieu Romanens presented the program Old Music in the Remix in collaboration with the jazz duo Schntzl at the MA Festival Bruges. That same year, the ensemble performed at the Laus Polyphoniae festival at AMUZ (Antwerp) and at the ReRenaissance and Erasmus klingt festivals (Basel). In 2024, the ensemble participated in the finals of the York International Young Artists Competition and in various concert series in Germany, France, and Kosovo, performing a wide variety of repertoire: from Cantigas de Santa Maria to Italian Trecento monody, and from Minnesänger music to Alemannic love songs of the 16th century.
